Want To Share A Nut-Olive Sandwich
Goshen Indiana, October 31, 2008 We are at the Olympian Lunch Counter and Candy Store in Goshen Indiana and we are enjoyng the biggest Bananna split we’ve had in years, the yummiest too. The restaurant opened in 1912 and other than the honking big HDTV flat screen playing ESPN SportCenter over the counter, nothing has changed, we have stepped back in time. As you come in the lunch counter is down your left, wooden booths across the back. Down the right side your eyes are treated to the biggest selection of candies and chocolates you can imagine. We are sitting on our red leatherette covered stools knocking back our (one split, two spoons please) split and I’m reading the old style plasticized menu. Tucked in with the grilled cheese, and the rest of the sandwiches is one called Nut Olive and another called Pork and Olive. I want to try one of these so bad, but the split is so big I can only ask about them. They buy their cashews “naked” and roast them themselves, then crunch them up and mix them with chopped olives. White bread, toasted. Pork and Olive is roasted pork roast with chopped olives. We step back into the warm sunny afternoon and continue our walk down the 4 or block “main drag”. It’s Halloween afternoon, there are hundreds of little mermaids, supermen and Hanna Montana’s up and down the street filling their bags with treasures. There are gorrillas and ghosts and monsters all delivering the booty. The town is alive and everyone is having fun. We are glad we found Goshen Indiana.
