Meet The Happy Couple

November 16th, 2008

I’ll bet it took 15 minutes to finally get this picture. And, as you can see,we are still smiling. We must be happy!

We are enjoying a bike ride down the beach, mile after mile of hard packed sand, warm sunshine, just the right breeze, when Mar decides we need a picture to “remember the moment”. We stop near some posts in the sand, Mar sets the camera up, gets me in position, but can’t quite get the camera timer to work like it should. After at least 10 attempts to make it all work, smiling all the while, finally we have success. This is not the picture we took on timer. The back story is that while we are posing for this final shot a young guy in his pick up on his way fishing, stops his truck, jumps out smiling “I’ve been there, done that” he says, grabs the camera and shoots this shot.

Thankyou unknown driver on way fishing. You took a great picture. We will cherish it every time we see this picture and remember with “joy” all the crap we went through to get it.

Today, after a final beach walk, we move on to Brownsville

Thanks again for reading.

We are in the Meriwether Lewis Campsite at about mile 385 of the Natchez Trace Parkway. It’s a free, first come, first served campground operated by the National Parks Service. We got in here at about 2 yesterday afternoon and got the last available site This is one of the half dozen of the biggest sites here and as you can see, it’s none too big. We are in a forest of hardwood trees, catching just the last bits of leaf colors. It is so forested that our dish tried for about 90 minutes yesterday to find the satellite before it gave up in disgust, and folded itself back down on the roof. We were forced to spend the evening listening to our favorite channel 33, Sirius Disorder on our Sirius satellite radio, sipping some fine red.

There are 30 sites in this park, today at least 18 of them have Quebec license plates on the vehicles, 3 Ontario, the rest are US residents. You can stay here 14 days if you wish, but the temperature is supposed to drop into the low 30’s tomorrow night. We plan on being gone further down the Parkway in the morning. Since we started on the Parkway we have not seen the Golden Arches, Wendys, Waffle House or any of the other 50 signs that populate the US interstates. We have seen a donkey, deer, beautiful rural farms with neat old barns. Other than the sound of people talking and the odd generator there is silence, nothing but silence. There are no services in the campground, poor us, we had to start our generator to make our Cappucino’s after our walk this morning. It rained last night, but the sun is now coming out so we plan to get down the bikes as soon as we finish our coffees. Eat your heart out Starbucks.

Thanks for reading.

Good Bye Kentucky

The L-N Turnpike

The L-N Turnpike

Since we arrived in Kentucky Sunday morning we have been dazzled by the beauty of this area. The rolling countryside, the Walnut, Oak, and numerous other kinds of trees, all in their last days of color. We have been blessed by mid 70’s weather everyday. According to the forecast later today will bring winds of change. By Friday the highs will be mid 50’s and they will have seen some rain. It’s time for us to move on.

We have had some great walks, like on the Lousiville-Nashville Turnpike you see here, a great bike ride, we got the tandem down yesterday and found out first hand how “rolling” this country actually is.  Today, on the Turnpike we met three hunters, from North Caolina they said. With their bows and arrows they were hiking the mountains hunting for deer. The luck was all on the deer’s side yesterday it seems, but they, like us, were enjoying a gorgeous fall day.

Today we skirt the edge of Nashville Tennessee and head for a little town called Franklin where early afternoon we plan to drive and bike and hike the Natchez Trace Parkway. We are looking forward to it. Why not join us.
