I Greet Jim's Horse
November 3, 2008
We set out today to do the “tourist thing”, there are so many “attractions’ in this area. We set out first to see Abe Lincoln’s birthplace. It’s a beautiful National park about a half hour from Elizabethtown. We see a log cabin “like” the one he was born in, and walk the grounds. The leaves are absolutely gorgeous this time of year, the signs and presentation tell the story of his first couple of years well. We enjoy the entire experience.
We are then on our way, hoping to meet another new friend named Jim, we are enjoying the drive in the country when suddenly we spy this sign:

An Oasis
Now to get the significance of this sign, this guiding light, you would need to have read yesterday’s post. You will recall that I considered my life near over if I didn’t get rum soon. On our way to meet Jim we cross a county line and lo and behold, we are saved. This really is a good day!
But we digress, in just another 10 miles down that same country road and we see the sign. We have arrived at 149 Happy Hollow in Clermont KY at the Jim Beam Distillery
So after the tour we sample Jim’s finest. Marilyn really likes Bourbon she says, and I think I could get used to it. We bought a Sample Pack just to find out

We are in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Right in that part of Kentucky famous for among other things, Caves, Abe Lincoln’s birthplace and the Bourbon Trail, the area of Kentucky famous for distilling, you guessed it, Bourbon. Tragedy of all tragedies, I’m out of rum and down to about 3 bottles of beer. We still have about 8 or 9 cans of Coors Lite, but I’ve never considered that particular brand “Beer”. We are booked in here for the next 4 nights, and there is no booze in sight. You see, out of the 110 or so counties in Kentucky about half are dry. We have chosen to temporarily reside in one of them. Marilyn, good wife that she is, asked at one store today where to get some cold beer and was told that, yes, you could buy beer but the closest store is about 25 miles away and they only sell beer. Or you can buy a small “Commemorative” bottle of Bourbon at one of the local distilleries. Not bottles we are told, but A bottle you can keep as a souvenir. I’ve always thought that I Hated bourbon but apparently I’m about to change my mind about that too.
They say “Travel broadens the mind” and I guess they are right.

Mar is
Goshen Indiana, October 31, 2008 We are at the Olympian Lunch Counter and Candy Store in Goshen Indiana and we are enjoyng the biggest Bananna split we’ve had in years, the yummiest too. The restaurant opened in 1912 and other than the honking big HDTV flat screen playing ESPN SportCenter over the counter, nothing has changed, we have stepped back in time. As you come in the lunch counter is down your left, wooden booths across the back. Down the right side your eyes are treated to the biggest selection of candies and chocolates you can imagine. We are sitting on our red leatherette covered stools knocking back our (one split, two spoons please) split and I’m reading the old style plasticized menu. Tucked in with the grilled cheese, and the rest of the sandwiches is one called Nut Olive and another called Pork and Olive. I want to try one of these so bad, but the split is so big I can only ask about them. They buy their cashews “naked” and roast them themselves, then crunch them up and mix them with chopped olives. White bread, toasted. Pork and Olive is roasted pork roast with chopped olives. We step back into the warm sunny afternoon and continue our walk down the 4 or block “main drag”. It’s Halloween afternoon, there are hundreds of little mermaids, supermen and Hanna Montana’s up and down the street filling their bags with treasures. There are gorrillas and ghosts and monsters all delivering the booty. The town is alive and everyone is having fun. We are glad we found Goshen Indiana.
