Just Because I’m Canadian

January 22nd, 2010

I was watching a bit of the telethon Friday night and I heard a young lady say “Just because I’m Canadian…..

In 2001/2002 I sold time share  for a winter in Cabo San Lucas, in the Baja, Mexico. They employed Canadians and Americans because the Americans (their big customers in those days) wouldn’t deal with the Mexicans.  Some of us, both Canadian and American were not exactly the most fine upstanding citizens. In fact they were everything you have ever thought about time share sales people and way, way worse. I remember thinking more than once “just because I’m Canadian I was making thousands a week compared to their $100, no plurals. We have it so good, others do not. We are so priviliged because we are born where we are born.  They( the people of other countries) are just as talented, just as smart, just as personable as us. They just weren’t born where we were born.

We are fortunate, Mar & I. We have travelled a bunch these past few years and have many more travels planned. Yes, we have worked hard, yes we have saved hard but so do the people we met  in China and now meet daily in  Mexico. It’s us visiting them, not the other way around.

The majority of my readers are  Canadian. You and I, we are so lucky, We have so much. Yes we are good at what we do( or did).Yes we work (worked) hard and yes,we are talented (OK,we still have the talent), but mostly we are  just lucky because we are  Canadian.

We have a job to do in Haiti.  Please Donate Now

I thought this was going to be another long boring blog post, but I was pleasantly suprised. I will be posting a backlink on my blog, as I am quite sure my readers will find this more than interesting.

It’s All Good

November 9th, 2009

Saturday was just another just amazing day. We left early and bright, caught the 6:45 ferry to Nanaimo and were in Courtnay in time for a lunch with Garth & Lee. We haven’t sat down and had a chat with them for probably 4 or 5 years.  It was just great to catch up. When we were in the Baja we had some good ones with those two!

Next, off to my aunt Molly’s. Just after we arrived, to our surprise, in walked my cousin Jim and his wife Karen in town from Winnipeg to visit with his mother. An hour later, Molly’s daughter Kathy drops in. This is just getting amazing. Then we were off to Kathy’s for dinner and met her kids. We were having a great time.

About 7 we headed back to Nanaimo for the 8:45 boat back to the mainland.

Now the other half of the story:

When you travel to and from Vancouver Island you need to pay special attention to the schedule of ferrry sailings. We checked the schedules on the boat and Garth cut another out of the local paper for us. According to the paper, if we missed the 8:45 boat, we still had about 3 or more before they shut down for the night. We had it all figured out, except we missed the asterisk (*). You know, the one that’s followed by except Saturdays. Long story short, we missed the last boat. The next chance to get back to the mainland wasn’t until 10:15 Sunday, it’s now about 9:00 Saturday night.

Guess who spent the night in the pet friendly Best Western? Mar got to have a bath, in a bath tub, a real one. And Buster got a new toy.

After a Sunday breakfast at White Spot  (OK, OK, we’re homesick) we caught the 10:15, we were back home in our coach by 1:30 Sunday afternoon.

We hooked up with some old friends, some fun relatives, and  had a night in a hotel with the dogs.

It’s all good!

Roads And Weather

November 2nd, 2009

It’s 5:27  in the morning. I’ve checked the BC road reports, I’ve checked the weather reports. They are all good. This morning we head west on the Yellowhead Highway and will arrive in Kamloops in a couple of days. We are going to see some wet but we are also going to start shedding some clothes and you gotta know Buster’s going to be happy about that. He does not like his sweater. I even caught myself wondering where my shorts are. Slow down Larry, you’ve got a long way to go yet.

This week in Alberta has been great, no; even better than that. From our visit with Gwen & Clark in Hanna last Monday night to our great fun with Irene, Jan and her family including Brad, Ryan and Kathy and their kids, Mar’s aunt Agnes, our friends Bill & Carol and an amazing reunion with Mike, Tracy, Abby and Cameron it’s been one amazing week. I even got to have a beer with Ron, my ex wife’s beau.

Thankyou all for the amazing great memories and stories. We’ll be sharing them with each other as we roll down this highway we call life.

Just a warning to all we meet down the road: Our grandchildren ARE  better than yours; now we have proof.
