Buddy, Can You Spare A Beer

Novmber 2, 2008

We are in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Right in that part of Kentucky famous for among other things, Caves, Abe Lincoln’s birthplace and the Bourbon Trail, the area of Kentucky famous for distilling, you guessed it, Bourbon. Tragedy of all tragedies, I’m out of rum and down to about 3 bottles of beer. We still have about 8 or 9 cans of Coors Lite, but I’ve never considered that particular brand “Beer”. We are booked in here for the next 4 nights, and there is no booze in sight. You see, out of the 110 or so counties in Kentucky about half are dry. We have chosen to temporarily reside in one of them. Marilyn, good wife that she is, asked at one store today where to get some cold beer and was told that, yes, you could buy beer but the closest store is about 25 miles away and they only sell beer. Or you can buy a small “Commemorative” bottle of Bourbon at one of the local distilleries. Not bottles we are told, but A bottle you can keep as a souvenir. I’ve always thought that I Hated bourbon but apparently I’m about to change my mind about that too.

They say “Travel broadens the mind” and I guess they are right.
